Ashtanga Yoga is a system of yoga that was first cited by Vamana Rishi in the ancient text, Yoga Korunta. It has then been passed down through the years through the lineage of guru to student, including Rama Mohan Brahmachari, Sri T. Krishnamacharya, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and R. Sharath. According to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Ashtanga Yoga is an eight-limbed path of yoga, consisting of the practice of yamas (self-restraints), niyamas (personal observances), asanas (postures), pranayama (breath control), pratyahara (sensory withdrawal), dharana (concentration), dhayana (meditation), and samadhi (absorption in the Self).

Mysore-style Ashtanga Yoga refers to the daily practice of asanas, using vinyasas (synchronization of breath and movement), drishti (focal point of the gaze), and bandhas (internal energy locks), as taught by Guruji (Sri K. Pattabhi Jois) and R. Sharath in Mysore, India. Through the diligent practice of the asanas, we cultivate an internal fire which purifies us from physical, emotional, and mental toxins, creating a strong, healthy, flexible body and steady mind. Through the constant refinement of the asanas, we are embarking on a profound journey of healing, self-transformation, and self-realisation, in which we not only realign the physical body, but also integrate the connection between the mind, body, heart, and soul. When we practice with devotion, compassion, and surrender, we are able to connect with an immense inner joy and peace, bringing balance to our lives.

In a Mysore-style Ashtanga Yoga class, each student is taught individually within a group setting. He/she learns the sequence of asanas in a systematic way with the guidance of a qualified teacher, who helps the student through verbal and physical adjustments. All levels are welcome.
